Style Diary — Layering for Warmth while Staying Stylish

Happy Tuesday Lovelies!!

Oh my goodness was it cold this past week!  I'm talking wayyyy under 32 degrees! While I was lucky enough to have decent weather when shooting this outfit, the drop in temp has had me researching the best ways to stay warm and experimenting with stylish ways to add some extra layers! So continuing with this past weekend's post's theme of layering, I want to share some tips and tricks I've found on how to layer for warmth stylishly and effectively!

  1. Invest in and Wear Thin Turtlenecks - even by themselves they're warm, but try layering them!  Under a cardigan, cami, short sleeve top, sweater, sweatshirt, or even over a slip dress!

  2. Wear OTK boots - they are a great extra layer for your legs (leather and suede ones do especially well at keeping in the warmth) and take any outfit to the next level!

  3. Layer coats - wearing a leather jacket under a long wool jacket is becoming a pretty neat trend- it adds a lot of extra warmth and looks so chic!

  4. Wear a hat! - while it may be a myth that most of your heat escapes through your head, it often ends up being the only not-covered part of people's bodies.  Plus there are so many cute ones out there now!

  5. Wear matching hats, scarves, and/or gloves - wearing these may be a no brainer, but why not match or coordinate them too?  Anything you're wearing can be an accessory ;)

  6. Wear a pair of tights (or two) under your pants - wearing tights under my jeans has to be one of my new favorite ways to stay warm, especially wearing ones with a pattern of some sort under ripped jeans!

  7. Double up on Socks - Even if you have tights on, wearing two pairs of socks is a great solution to keeping your feet a bit more warm!

  8. Opt for several thin layers over a few thick layers - it will help you retain more heat and keep you from looking bulky!  If you are going to add a thick layer, save it for last!

  9. Choose wool - and other heat retaining fabrics such as leather and fleece.  Avoid cotton!

  10. Get hand/foot warmers - When you can't add anymore layers, adding something that gives off heat is a great option!  Some of the shoots I've done recently have been freeeeezing (I dream of moving to the west coast someday, where the weather is almost always nice!) but these little guys have helped so much!

  11. Wear a belt - this will help keep you looking from a giant marshmallow and give you some shape/definition!

  12. Limit your prints/colors - If you're wearing multiple layers, the last thing you want to do is look like a fabric shop exploded.  Keep your colors and prints streamlined, or go for all neutrals!  Black tends to be my go to color, so I have pretty much every accessory in black: a coat, gloves, bag, hat, boots, a scarf...  Now I probably won't wear all at once often, but I will go with mostly black and choose a few pieces to accentuate, like maybe grey booties and my blush printed scarf.  Limit how much you have going on, streamlined looks sophisticated and less is more!

I hope that gives you guys some ideas on chic, yet effective ways to layer for warmth during the next few months of winter!  If you live somewhere where you don't need to worry about this, well, you're lucky! ;)  For those of you who also have cold winters, I'd love to hear your favorite ways to layer!  Do you do any of these, or are you now going to?

xo,

Laurelle
