Spring/Summer 2017 Style Trends — Stripes
Spring/Summer 2017 Trends | Stripes, The Brenton Shirt, and Coco Chanel
Happy Friday! Another week has come and gone, somehow! I can't believe Mother's Day is just over a week away! Anyone still need to buy their gift? ;) I think I know what I'm going to be getting my mom, but I need to get it soon, haha! Today on Belle by Laurelle, I'm continuing with my spring/summer 17 style trends series, and talking about another trend that I'm absolutely loving...stripes!! I've always been a fan of stripes. I think because I love neutrals, and stripes usually are very versatile and neutral while never being boring!
Stripes are especially great for spring and summer, because they bring a slight nautical/beachy vibe to an outfit, and few things scream summer more than time in, near, or on the water! I began thinking about that while writing this though, and it made me wonder... why exactly are stripes associated with boating and the water?? Has anyone else ever wondered this?
If so, I've got some fun facts for you! Stripes first became associated with the sea in 1858, when France made the Brenton striped shirt the official uniform for the French Navy in Brittany. The Brenton Striped shirt was manufactured in Bentagne (hence the name Brenton), was made from cotton and wool, and had a boat neck. The original design had 21 stripes to signify each of Napoleon’s victories. It gradually became a popular working mariner garment as the material was easy to move around in and the stripes made it easy to spot a sailor who fell overboard. When Coco Chanel visited the French coast in the early 1900s, she was inspired by it and included the Brenton design in her 1917 nautical collection.
Wasn't that fascinating?? I love learning the inspiration behind things, whether it be a fashion trend, a piece by Beethoven, or what made a person what they are today. I hope you guys enjoyed learning about stripes as much as I did! I also went 'shopping' for you online and rounded up some of cutest and chicest striped tops I could find, in case you now feel inspired to add some stripes into your spring/summer wardrobe!

The top I'm wearing is only $18; I love how it looks a bit masculine and has a boat neck. Both are definitely nods towards the Brenton shirt! I also have been wearing these mules and ankle jeans non-stop, as you can probably tell from my recent outfit posts! The exact pairs are sold out, but I linked some very similar ones below!
